What does BRDC Program Coordinator and Naturalist Lisa Benish have in her daypack? Here is a list of items she carries to ensure that she is prepared for all of her explorations:
- day pack (with multiple pockets and easy access)
- first aid kit (I carry one for basic day hikes but you can make your own)
- binoculars
- camera (with macro capabilities)
- small hand lens
- 10x loupe on a string (for observing items very close like rocks)
- mechanical pencil
- field notebook (waterproof preferable and not to heavy)
- butterfly/insect net (collapsable)
- pocket knife or leatherman type multi-tool
- tweezers/hemistats
- collection containers (with magnified lid)
- zip lock baggies
- tape measure (small retractable with inches and centimeters)

- safety whistle
- compass (should know how to use too)
- matches
- emergency blanket (comes tiny and packed)
- String, paracord or dental floss (you never know what you might need it for)
- small plant press
- maps of area traveling in
- hand warmers (I carry in winter time along with gloves and toboggan)
- snacks
