Blue Ridge Discovery Center recently received a very exciting contribution from the Konnarock Retreat House to make the historic Konnarock Training School building our future home!! This incredible property aligns perfectly with our long-term vision for serving the community and region at large. We would like to invite you to join us for an OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, December 9th, to share that vision, get feedback, and step together into the next phase of BRDC. We think you will be just as inspired as we are!
Imagine a place where groups of youth can come stay for days at a time, a base camp to launch explorations to the region's mountains and rivers. Imagine an institution that supports a network of scientists focused on one of the greatest ecological treasures in North America. Imagine a gateway that teaches visitors and community members about the complex ecosystem that they are a part of. Imagine the potential for social, environmental, and economic impact...
Keep in mind, this building needs a lot of work, but thanks to the hard work of the previous owners, the Konnarock Retreat House, the building is ready for the next step. It comes to us with strong bones, a near perfect roof, beautiful bark siding, and a floor plan that fits perfectly. The 5.25 acre property is surrounded by National Forest on two sides stretching up the North slope of Whitetop Mountain. Based on its location, layout, and history we feel like this property has potential like no other.
Now is the time to talk about how we can make the most of this incredible opportunity, to dream big and envision a future where Blue Ridge Discovery Center is an actual Center!
We hope you will join us for a festive day in Konnarock. In the cottage beside the Center, we will be providing finger food, winter drinks (hot chocolate and cider), and a BRDC goody bag. We will have a thought board in the center to share inspirations and a firepit out back to spark ideas.
Put on your creative hat, bring your holiday spirit, and come step into this next big phase of BRDC with us!
All ages welcome (some of the best ideas come from the 5-year-olds). Bring family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors!
