BRDCs Highland Games course was a competitive program where Galax Middle School students competed, as clans and as individuals, in a series of traditional Appalachian contests testing strength, endurance, agility and problem solving.
Students had fun, learned the value of participating as a team, and learned about the cultural heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Students participated in a caber toss, tug of war, jump rope, long jump, three-legged race, hoop roll, and a variety of old-time games such as jacks and marbles. They also learned about the musical heritage of the Blue Ridge, and even tried a little flat footing accompanied by banjo.
At the end of the week, team and individual ribbons were awarded.
