Red Admiral, September 11, 2012

This morning I found a Red Admiral, Vanessa atalanta, on the moth sheet, giving me an opportunity for a detailed photo. Because folks are more likely to recognize the dorsal view, I pulled an image from July 2010 out of my back files. Red Admiral is one of three Vanessas that we see in southwestern Virginia. The other two are American Lady and Painted Lady.
