Asteroid Moth

The Asteroid Moth, Cucullia asteroides, is a very good example of the reason that we can walk through the woods on a summer day without seeing the moths that are present. The moth appeared on my sheet on August 3 where it was easy to spot and almost as easy to photograph. Imagine trying to find it if it were sitting on a branch of a tree or on the rough bark of a trunk. Impossible to find? No. Almost impossible? Yes.
