The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is Virginia’s only native bear species. When compared to other species of bear found in the wider United States, such as grizzly bears, our native black bears are smaller and lack a large back hump. “Smaller” is certainly still a relative term, although, as black bears can weigh over 700-lbs. They can normally be found in high-elevation forests, but have been known to wander into urban areas as their habitats are being encroached on by humans. During the winter months, these bears may be found in dens hibernating. When bears hibernate, they are not fully asleep, but body temperature drops some and metabolism decreases significantly. Hibernation occurs primarily as a response to limited food resources, though weather also plays a role. One to three 1/2 -lb black bear cubs can be born to a mother during these winter months. By the time spring arrives, the cubs are usually around 5-lbs and ready to explore the world. Once they reach 1.5 years old, they’re independent enough to strike out on their own.
