The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is Virginia’s only native bear species. When compared to other species of bear found in the wider United States, brown and grizzly bears, our native black bears are smaller and lack a large back hump. “Smaller” is certainly still a relative term, though, as black bears can grow up to 7-feet-long and weight as much as 175-lbs. They can normally be found in forests, but have been known to wander into urban areas as their habitats are being encroached on by humans. During the winter months, these bears can be found in dens hibernating. One to three 1/2 -lb black bear cubs can be born to a mother during these winter months. By the time spring arrives, the cubs are usually around 5-lbs and ready to explore the world. Once they reach 1.5 years old, they’re independent enough to strike out on their own.
