How to begin mothing.
To begin mothing you need a black light or lights and, if you don't have a handy light-colored wall or a table top on which you can put a sheet, a standing or hanging moth sheet. Here are photos of my current set up.
I'm fortunate to have a porch to use, but if you don't a shepherd's crook used to hold hanging flower pots works well.
You'll also need a digital camera with a close-focus mode because you'll need photos to identify the critters that appear. You'll see moths, midges, wasps, beetles, mayflies, stoneflies, and more. Don't expect to identify everything you see. All experienced moth-ers have a large collection of unidentified moths. I'll discuss available references in another post.
